If I am pulled over for a DC DUI, what should I tell police?

You are never required to answer questions asked by police.  While you must provide them with your license, proof of insurance, and registration, you do not have to answer probing questions.  Your answers to any of their questions can be used against you and you are not obligated to help the police build their case.  In fact, you have a right to abstain from answering questions under the Fifth Amendment’s protection against self-incrimination.  You are entitled to ask to speak with an attorney before answering any questions.  If you do tell police that you have been drinking, you are giving them an admission that is not in your best interest and that may be used against you in court.
